Lori Howell Excellence in Fetal Nursing Award

Lori J Howell Excellence in Fetal Nursing Award

This annual award will be given to an individual who embodies the level of excellence in fetal nursing that Lori brought to the field as recognized by their physician colleagues.

Lori J Howell, DNP, MS, RN was a leader in the field of fetal nursing and defined the currently known role of fetal nurse coordinator.  Her career began at University of California, San Francisco where she served as the first fetal surgery nurse coordinator.  She then moved across the country to Philadelphia where she was instrumental in establishing the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  Over her remarkable career Lori always placed the patient and family first.  Her insistence on clinical excellence for mothers, babies and families facing a diagnosis of a congenital anomaly resulted in many saved lifetimes that are celebrated by those under her care around the world.

Lori’s tireless work moved the field forward in many ways.  She was a constant innovator, whether this was related to direct patient care, supporting research efforts, or the creation of unique programs. She moved mountains to remove barriers for families so that they could have access to the best care possible through the creation of travel funding, philanthropy, creative scheduling, and advocacy.

Her commitment to advancing the field of fetal nursing was unwavering and felt by many.  Lori was responsible for creating many unique nursing roles in fetal diagnosis and intervention, pediatric surgical care, and research that are now commonplace at our institutions.  She mentored numerous nursing colleagues over the years and helped those to continue to advance their careers, as well as the field of fetal intervention.

This award in Lori’s name is dedicated to honoring our nursing colleagues in fetal diagnosis and treatment without whom we as physicians would not be able to optimally care for patients or continue to advance the field.
